Pioneer Life
Most American pioneers grew food in order to survive. This photo shows a couple plowing corn on their Nebraska farm in 1888. Their home, shown in the background, is made of sod, a combination of dirt and grass.
Daniel Boone, center, with gun, was a famous pioneer and explorer of the American frontier. Boone helped blaze a trail through the rugged wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains.
After gold was discovered in California in 1848, thousands of pioneers went west hoping to strike it rich. These men are panning for gold in a stream.
In the 1830s, the United States government forced many Native Americans to move to Indian Territory. This territory later became part of the state of Oklahoma. The march to Indian Territory became known as the Trail of Tears
