Cowboys in the early days of the American West drove huge herds of cattle across the open plains. They took the cattle to new feeding grounds or to the cities to sell them.
With his blue jeans, wide-brimmed hat, kerchief, and boots, this boy is dressed like a traditional Western cowboy.
Many country-music artists have written and sung songs about cowboys. This song, “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” was recorded by American country singers Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It is dedicated to the history of cowboys and the West. This statue, called End of the Trail, symbolizes the closing of the American frontier.
